Freedom

Let me say first that this is a sponsored post. YES!!!!! I love a sponsored post especially if it involves a flight to Sydney, a fab city suite, a day to shop till I drop (my money not theirs boohoo) and then an invite to the launch of Freedom's autumn collection on Wednesday. Great design and style don't need a great big price tag to match so I can't wait to see what Freedom, one of Australia's leading furniture and homewares purveyors has in store. Promise I'll let you know as soon as I can. I'm excited!

yoo is a residential interior and architecture design firm, the result of a partnership between property entrepreneur John Hitchcox and world renowned designer Philippe Starck. This firm has set out to design the world, with projects throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, North and South America and the Middle East. And to make this firm even more impressive is its lineup of superstar designers - Marcel Wanders, Jade Jagger, Kelly Hoppen and Anouska Hempel. I don't think you can go wrong by investing in a yoo property! Especially when they look THIS good....

Quarto & Sala

I've been dealing with a massive headache for about 12 hours now and I'm not sure what or who to blame it on - perhaps the 20 degree celsius drop in temperature overnight, or the 3 times I flew out of bed in the middle of the night at the sounds of a cat barfing (each time a different cat). All this to say I have little motivation for blogging at the moment but I pushed through my misery to put together a selection of photos from this website that in a previous post I refered to as the Brazilian Selby. Enjoy. (And no need to feel sorry for me - I did arrive home to find a little package in the mail which made me feel better).

Franco's apartment

We've gotten a few reader emails lately with some interior design projects that I wanted to share so I thought I'd feature them all today. This first one comes from Franco. He is a brand manager in São Paulo and wanted to share his new apartment with us. It's actually more like a little peek, but I think the photography is superb so without further ado, welcome to Franco's Brazilian pad.

Maureen's DIY headboard

Project #2 is from Maureen of The Inglenook Decor who was contacted by HGTV.com to create a budget-friendly DIY headboard that they wanted to feature. Maureen started the project by stalking Craigslist for somebody who could make a wood cutout, used leftover chalkboard paint and primer paint, dustless chalk (who knew?!?!) and a favourite vintage silhouette. I LOVE how it turned out. (Photos by Chris).

Jessica wrote us regarding 2 of her interior design projects. She works for a large design firm in LA (but is hoping to go out on her own), is a fellow blogger, and has an Etsy shop. She is quite talented, as you can see by this redo of her former home - a 600 sq. ft. co-op in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. They put alot of hard work into this place and the result is amazing (I love the blue trimmed windows)!

Some before photos:

And AFTER!!!

Stay tuned later for another of Jessica's projects!

Jessica from my previous post took on the design of her friends' home almost 2 years ago and the result is a warm, contemporary vibe that is classic and will stand the test of time. Talk about gorgeous colours! Thanks for sharing Jessica!

Retro

There was a time on DTI that week after week I slavishly copied images from my extensive retro interior design book collection. One day I just couldn't scan anymore. I had come to the last one. It was a sad day. Today is a good day for lovers of the retrolicious. Thanks to the wonderful Lia we get to crave and cringe again for one more day. Images from "Schoner Wohnen" from 1976. This has reignited my retro design book addiction. I'm on the hunt for more! If you need more retro too head to my (extensive) collection of past posts here.

Exterior ideas

I am in panic mode now - my trip is less than a week away and I have hardly crossed off any items on my TO DO list. AH WELL. As a result I did not have time to travel around blogland looking for my favourite photos of the week to post today. Rather, I had to spend some time digging through my photo stash looking for photos of the exterior of homes because my architect emailed the other day wanting to know what we were thinking of (we're replacing the ugly-ass siding on the existing house too so it will be a BIG job with a hefty price tag) . I have no freaking clue what to tell him - all I know is because it's pretty much 2 flat 2-story rectangles perhaps some of the windows could protrude a bit and at least 2 different materials could provide some visual interest. I have never had the opportunity to deal with the exterior of a home before so I figured we could just send him some photos of inspiration and he could figure something out for now. I narrowed it down to the photos below. If anyone has suggestions please feel free to leave them in the comments (plans we have so far for the new house are here).

Stalking cool

It's hip. It's cool. It's retro modern and I want it to be mine. Add a piece of art or two. Find a place for my Featherstone chairs. Maybe a PNG spirit house totem in the corner and I would be very very happy in this Surry Hills warehouse. Sometimes stalking pays off. I'm already living my imaginary life here :)

Monday's pets on furniture - part 1

If you'd like to send us photos to include in next week's "pets on furniture" post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. (Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off...and your pet happens to be sitting on it). And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it's dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos, your name, location and a brief description can be sent to desiretoinspirekim@hotmail.com and PLEASE don't send me closeups of your pet!)

***Pets on furniture will be put on hold for the next couple of weeks while I am on holidays. Feel free to continue submitting photos to me. I will resume these posts on March 14th.

P.S. I'd like to wish my husband a very happy thirty something birthday! How about a trip to Mexico for your pressie? :-) Love you Jeffrey!!

Here is my kitten Harriet-who I usually just refer to as Muffin Top ( "...is all that whole grain low fat" 30 rock anyone? )- on a mid-century looking chair i found for five whole dollars  recently. Two of my favorite things.

Some readers' bedrooms

We received emails from Stephanie (from Montreal) and Bec who wanted to show off their bedrooms that they say were inspired by desire to inspire. Big smiles from both Jo and I as we're here to inspire the pants off of you all. I thought I'd share them with you today, starting with Stephanie's (the rest of Stephanie's and Bec's will be after the jump).

I've been a big fan of your blog for a while now, and your posts have definitely been a huge inspiration for my new bedroom. Though I'm not a professional photographer with a big (and expensive!) camera, I've got some decent shots and a very adorable kitten is even featured !

Heidi's new pad

Back in May of last year, Jo blogged the awesome San Francisco pad of DTI reader Heidi Lender. It turns out Heidi recently moved to Uruguay, and she gave us a little glimpse of her home in the first photo of this pet post a few weeks ago. She kindly sent us some photos of her new digs, along with a bit of info. She's done an incredible job and I'm so excited to share it with you all.

Excited about our new digs -- a century-old ranch in Uruguay, whose dilapidated little house we are in the midst of remodeling -- and wanted to share (even though it's not completely done). We sent a container's worth of our belongings from San Francisco, and smattered with its contents, this rundown house felt immediately like home (not without a lot of construction woes and obstacles and dust, of course). You can see all of the furnishings from the San Fran flat that you posted back in May....amazed at how different it all looks down here. We bought the O'Keefe and Merrit stove off of Craigslist and shipped it down too, along with the vintage sink in the bathroom that had been sitting in our backyard forever, waiting for the perfect home.

P.S. Her photos are pretty fab - turns out she's a photographer! Check out her website here. I freaking love her Once Upon self-portait series (a photo-tale that examines the individual through fashion and environment). A few of those photos are featured after the jump.

I suppose ...

... I should have known. Saw this amazing exhibitionist bathroom by Suppose Design Office in the latest Vogue Living. Raced to their website and devoured their unique Japanese take on minimalism. Great post idea until Kim informed me she had featured their work last year. I suppose I should have known. Still I had to share this bathroom. OMG! Love. Very scared about using it but love the concept.

VoK Design Group

The other day while flipping through the Interiors issue of Ottawa Magazine that little 'ol me was featured in, there was a GORGEOUS kitchen featured that was the creation of a new firm based here in Ottawa called VoK Design Group. This firm was created about a year ago by Dylan O'Keefe and Thu Vu. It's so great to see such talent here in Ottawa, a city not exactly renowned for its exciting residential design. Dylan contacted me the other day and was kind enough to send along photos of the home featured in the magazine. Not only that, he saw my call for help with the exterior of our home and he offered to help us!!!! I cannot begin to explain to you how excited I am to have Dylan and Thu help us (hopefully - we need to talk to our architect). :-) Let me show you why I am elated at the prospect of getting advice from this firm....

In a far away land, in a secret world of beauty, exotic luxury awaits.  A sigh has just escaped my lips. A dream, a fantasy. A reality for a special few. If I found a genie in a lamp and set him free I would want just one wish.  Riad Enija via Welcome Beyond.
